River Roughty

Catch: Salmon, Brown Trout & Sea Trout.

Location: Roughty river can be found flowing west through the village of Kilgarvan into the top of Kenmare Bay.

Description: This good river has very overgrown banks and it it a neglected and undeveloped water. Fish include a small run of spring Salmon with a good run of Grilse. Sea trout have declined in this water. But last year (2002) I saw several shoals of at least one hundred juvenile fish per shoal in a couple of deep holding pools, so things could be looking up. This river runs over a limestone bed for a good part of its length and I have always thought that it should produce quality brown trout but few people seem to fish for these. I have had browns to 1lb from here last year which was the first season I specifically tried for them.

Season: Sea trout & Brown trout are taken during March 15th – October 12th, with Salmon fishing during March 15th – September 30th.

Cost: Riparian ownership is very fragmented along the river but there a few places where there is fishing. John O’Hare also sells day tickets for the Ardtully stretch which has some very good pools.

Information on the fishing and the purchase of day tickets can be provided by the Fishing Tackle Shop, Main Street, Kenmare, John O Hare 064-41499.

Methods: Fly, spin, worm and shrimp.
